Understanding Your Bowling Average
How is bowling average calculated?
Your bowling average is the total number of pins you have knocked down divided by the total number of games played. Most bowling leagues require a minimum of 3 games before publishing an official average. If your first three games are 140, 165, and 172, your average is (140 + 165 + 172) ÷ 3 = 159.
What is a good bowling average?
The average recreational bowler scores around 120–140. A "good" score is relative to your experience level, but most league bowlers aim to break 150. Competitive amateur bowlers typically average 170+, and professionals average above 200. If you are consistently throwing 175+, you are a strong bowler.
How do I improve my bowling average?
The fastest way to raise your average is to improve spare conversion. Most missed spares are single-pin leaves — a focused spare game can add 10–20 points to your average immediately. Tracking your spare conversion rate by pin is the single most actionable stat. Strike percentage matters too, but spares are where most recreational bowlers leave points.
What is handicap in bowling?
Handicap is an equalizer that lets bowlers of different skill levels compete fairly. The standard USBC formula is: Handicap = (Basis score − your average) × 0.90. A common basis score is 220. So a bowler with a 150 average carries a handicap of (220 − 150) × 0.90 = 63 pins per game. Handicap is added to the actual score for league standings.
How many games does it take to establish an average?
USBC requires at least 12 games (4 series of 3) to establish an official league average. A larger sample — 30 or more games — gives you a more reliable picture of your true skill level. Early averages based on fewer games fluctuate significantly with any single good or bad game.
